Susan loves to work in black and white almost exclusively. She specializes in animal portraiture both exotic as well as domestic. She also delights in children and adults and older images of interesting faces.
A natural self-taught artist residing in the coastal community of Ventura, California, Susan Colla likes her work to get as close to realism as the photo allows and yet to still allow for them to look like pencil work and not a photograph. Her commissions are sometimes rendered in a looser style due to the reference photos lack of detail or high enough resolution. This loose work is still satisfying to her artistic sensibilities. Sometimes, colored pencil is used if that is desired by those who prefer color.
The past few years Susan has been fortunate enough to be shown regularly in competition at the Buenaventura Art Association Gallery in Ventura. She’s won 1st and 4th places in pencil at the Ventura County Fair Professional Art Div, as well as numerous honorable mentions and merit awards in many other competitions including the Santa Paula Society of Art at the Santa Paula Library. Susan has had several semi-solo shows in local venues, Fox Jewelers, Buenaventura Art Gallery, Ventura County Museum Art Alfresco, at C & C Realty and Art Gallery in Ventura and continuing opportunities as a member of the Buenaventura Art Association.
For 35 years Susan was a professional singer and teacher until health issues prompted an early retirement, thankfully there is ART. When Susan is not being wife, mother, and grandmother, nothing else compares to the enjoyment of creating her next drawing.
